Aamir Khan resigns from Copyright Act panel
February 17, 2010
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has resigned from the 10-member committee formed by Human Resources Development Ministry to review the amendments proposed to the Copyright Act. The committee was recently formed and Aamir was the only actor in it. According to media reports, there was a meeting between producers and writers over the issue of royalties. Aamir had a clash with writer Javed Akhtar on the contribution put up by the writers and lyricist in the movies. Aamir discredited writers and lyricist by saying they don’t have much part in success of a movie. According to reports, his point of view enraged Mr. Javed. Mr. Javed said the song “Papa Kahte Hain” from the actor’s first movie became hit, despite the fact it was his first movie. Aamir was not a star at that time so how can he deny the importance of lyricist.
Aamir wrote to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal yesterday,
“It seems to me that there is an attempt by certain people to attack me in public by printing lies about me, thereby turning the attention away from a genuine debate about copyright issues.”
The 44-year-old actor says he isn’t comfortable facing such allegations. The committee including Mukesh Bhatt, lyricist Javed Akhtar and Prasoon Joshi, Vishal Dadlani, Ram Sampat, Ramesh Sippy and Vishal Bhardwaj. Aamir said in his letter to Sibal,
“I am grateful to you for inviting me to be part of a committee to discuss the various issues regarding amendments to the Copyright Act. However in light of these public attacks on me, I don’t think I am comfortable to be part of this committee.”
