Dual Core Snapdragon from Qualcomm

The time is fast approaching when people having average computing needs would rely on their cell phones and would not feel the need to own a separate computer or laptop, because every day mobile processors are becoming so fast and powerful that soon most average computing tasks would be performed by cell phones. Take the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor for example. Recently the dual core version of the Snapdragon processor started shipping. This baby has 1.2GHz clock speed and two application cores, which probably makes it the fastest mobile processor in the market.

The high end cell phones incorporating the dual core Snapdragon may be seen in the near future. It is expected that these handheld processing monsters would come with an integrated graphics core capable of encoding and decoding videos of up to 1080p quality. The exact model number of the new processor is MSM8660 and it would have a graphics core that would support OpenGL 2.0. The maximum resolution that the graphics core would be able to handle has been stepped up to 1280×800. All phones containing the MSM8660 would be able to record and playback HD videos of 1080p quality, so there won’t be any more need to buy a HD camcorder (well maybe this doesn’t apply to camcorder geeks, but for most techies, 1080p recording would be more than impressive).

The color depth that would be supported in MSM8660 phones is 24 bit, which is impressive considering its much closer to color depths of PCs.
It is also expected that the 1.5GHz brother of the MSM8660 would be released sometime later this year.
