Beautiful Dolphins
A documentary by Fisher Stevens and Louie Psihoyos was regarded as the winner for this year’s Oscar Award in the category of Best Documentary. The documentary named “The Cove” exposed the killing of dolphins in a cove in Japan. Fisher Stevens and Louie Psihoyos had to fight with Japanese authorities and locals in Taiji to capture their acts in cameras. The Japanese authorities tried their best to keep them away from filming what they were doing with innocent dolphins.
The documentary exposed how Japanese fishermen were herding dolphins into a cover either to sell them abroad or to kill them and passing them off as whale meet on Japanese markets. The meat which they were selling abroad or which they were using as whale feed contained high levels of mercury but they had no problem with that dangerous level. Simon Hutchins was the expedition director of the documentary while Mandy-Rae Cruickshank and Kirk Krack made a brilliant job capturing the scenes of secret slaughter. The whole of the filming and still photography came through hidden cameras and microphones.
Producer Fisher Stevens said that it was an honor for him to on that film. He said that it was an attempt to show the world about the reality and it was a try to enlighten everybody. The Japanese fishermen defend it as part of Japanese tradition but the documentary provokes criticism against the illegal hunt. Taiji fishermen are angered on this documentary and they are not happy with the honor and appreciation the movie received at Oscar.
