Staten Island Chuck
February 2, 2010
Staten Island Chuck whose full name is Charles G. Hogg came out of his winter home unwillingly at 7:30 a.m. He did not see his shadow. So this was the prediction of spring season that is coming soon. However Puxsutawney Phil predicted that the winter season would continue for 6 more weeks. Both have made different predictions but since 1980 Chuck had made the correct predictions 80% of the time. Shubenacadie Sam of Nova Scotia also saw his shadow. Once again with this animal Mayor Bloomberg; officiator of the ceremony went hand-to-face. Chuck took a bite on the finger of Mayor last year.
Children became chanting during the ceremony that they wanted Chuck as Bloomberg appeared. This ceremony was presided by Advance Editor Brian Laline and many other community leaders and elected officials joined the ceremony. On Groundhog Day curious onlookers gathered around Staten Island Chuck and everybody had 2 questions with in his mind that whether it will be a spring season or winter will continue. Will once again Chuck bite Michael Bloomberg? But this time he had taken precautions, as there was still a scar of the last year bite of Chuck on his finger. He was wearing heavy-duty gloves when he picked up the groundhog. He was looking comfortable while holding the Groundhog for the camera. He joked that his fingers were the only thing that stood between the people of New York and the groundhog. He said that Chuck put up a good fight this year but he was prepared with the gloves. Chuck did not saw any shadow so according to Groundhog Day lore; warmer season is starting very soon.
